Why an unpadded sling?

You've probably heard of padded slings (Nojo Sling, Over the Shoulder Baby Holder, Heart to Heart*, etc.), and are wondering why we would recommend an unpadded sling over a padded one.

Some people think that the padding in a sling (in the shoulder area and in the upper and lower "rails") makes it more comfortable for parent and baby. However, the truth is, all that padding is really not necessary at all in order to have a comfortable, compact, streamlined sling! We used a padded sling for about four months, and these were the problems that we found:

1- The padding in the shoulder did not allow the sling to be moulded to our shoulder. As a result, the padded part just sat straight across our shoulder, and often dug into our neck. Rather uncomfortable!

2- The padded rails at the top and bottom of the sling acted as a "barrier" that did not allow our baby's body to be pulled in as tightly against our body as an unpadded sling would.

3- The rings could be pulled in and tightened only as far as the padded rails, and no further. This meant that although the sling was a right fit for my husband, it was always a little too loose on a shorty like me, even when tightened as much as possible. In addition, some padded slings do not allow the user to adjust the upper and lower rails separately. An unpadded sling allows for this.

4- The padded sling was rather bulky, and not so easy to fold up and pack into a bag or knapsack for an outing.

5- The padding sometimes made us uncomfortably hot.

6- Because of its awkward padding, it wasn't ideal to use as a blanket or shawl, nor did it have as many "other uses" as an unpadded sling.

The unpadded shoulder moulds itself to the wearer's shoulder.

The unpadded (and non-bulky) sling is all folded up and ready to go!

I LOVE IT!!  I much prefer it to the H2H [Heart to Heart sling], and E. did too.  He's snuggled in much closer and rode for much longer. Thank you so very much!
